François Burkhardt (*1936) made his name as an author, design theorist and architecture critic after having initially studied architecture. He was professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, at the HbK in Saarbrücken and at ISIA in Florence. He was director of the IDZ Berlin as well as the Centre de Création Industrielle in the Centre Georges Pompidou; he was also chairperson of the Designlabor Bremerhaven. As author and curator he has been responsible for numerous publications, exhibitions and international congresses in the areas of architecture, art and design. François Burkhardt was editor-in-chief of the periodicals Traverse, Crossing and Domus, he is currently chief editor of Rassegna. He acts as a consultant to various businesses and institutions and as art director is responsible for the re-edition series produced by the furniture manufacturer Gebrüder Thonet, Vienna.
